The app can be used in a number of places. For example, if you are staying over in a hotel that charges you based on the number of devices you connect to their Wi-Fi, you can just connect your laptop and use Connectify to operate the rest of the devices.

The procedure to set up a Wi-Fi hotspot is also very simple. Make sure your computer is connected to the internet and then launch Connectify Hotspot.

Windows 8 & 8.1

Windows 8.1, 8 and 7 come with built in set-ups that can turn your laptops into Wi-Fi hotspots. While Windows 7 comes with a graphic wizard that makes the task much easier, Windows 8 and 8.1 has done away with it so you have to take help from the command prompt window to create an ad-hoc wireless network.

Before we get into the command prompt window, we need to do a couple of things.

Now right click on the Windows icon on the bottom left corner of your screen and select the Command Prompt (admin) option.

In the command prompt window, type in the following command:

netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=”xyz” key=”Pa$$w0rd”

Here ssid is the name of your network and key is the password using which you can connect other devices to this network.

netsh wlan start hostednetwork

Now typing in the above command will start broadcasting your network.

netsh wlan show hostednetwork

Typing in this last command will show you the number of people connected to your network and also the channel that you’re on.

Windows 7

The process to set up a Wi-Fi network on Windows 7 is much easier and does not require you to type commands into the command prompt window. All you need to do is open the manage wireless networks window and click on the add button. Then click on the “Create an ad hoc network”.

All you need to do now is type in a name and password for the Wi-Fi network you’re about to set up and you’re almost done. Doing this will disconnect your laptop from the current Wi-Fi network it is connected to if any and create a new wireless network.
